How many First Aiders do I need in my setting?
It is imperative that all childcare settings train each staff member who works with children, including catering staff, administrative staff, and part-time supervisors. The guidelines set by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) require that there should be at least one person present on the premises who holds a current Paediatric First Aid (PFA 12 Hour) certificate. In addition, this person must be available at all times when children are present and must accompany them on outings.
Additionally, if any staff member obtained a level 2 or level 3 qualification on or after 30 June 2016, they need to have either a full PFA or an emergency PFA certificate within 3 months of starting work. This is important for them to be included in the required staff-to-child ratios at level 2 or level 3 in an early years setting.
As for childminders and assistants who may be in charge of the children alone, they should hold a current 12-hour paediatric first aid certificate.
Furthermore, it’s essential to renew paediatric first aid training every three years. This training should be relevant for workers who take care of young children and babies. As part of their first aid needs assessment, employers should consider the number of children, staff, and premises layout. This will ensure that a paediatric first aider can quickly respond to emergencies if needed.
